During conversations with trucking executives earlier in the year, most expressed cautious optimism that the outlook for the year would improve slightly during the second half. Now that we’ve arrived, however, it’s difficult to gauge whether the sector has turned the corner.

Rising fuel costs are the single issue to blame and worse yet, it doesn’t look likely to dissipate anytime soon.

“It’s creating an incredible impact on customers’ transportation budgets,” says John Hickerson, Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Office, FFE Transportation Services and President, American Eagle Lines and FFE Logistics (www.ffex.net). “There’s no denying it’s real. Our customers stop at the fuel pump on their way home and they experience it.”

The new lease program allows owner operators to choose a compensation option that fits their needs which allows owner operators to maximize their time or earning potential.

Joe Fennel, an owner-operator who has driven for Schneider for over 14 years, enjoys the freedom of dispatching himself on routes he chooses. I can go online anytime, day or night, point and click and I’m on my way. There are no agents to negotiate with and there is higher income potential. I couldn’t ask for a better scenario. I like knowing my loads, where I’m taking them and what’s coming up next. It gives me the chance to manage my business the way I want to.

Suppose you wanted to drive an over the road truck but didn’t want to spend the time in school to get your CDL. What if there was a way to skip your commercial vehicle competency exam and still be able to climb behind the wheel of a tractor trailer. Well, that is exactly what approximately 200 untrained truck drivers did.

Steven Baez, a sergeant with the Army National Guard got his hands on a stack of vouchers (Form DA-348E) that excuses drivers from taking the state of Florida commercial vehicle competency test. It seems that Mr Baez was able to sell approximately 200 of these vouchers for up to $4,300 each. Now Steven Baez is sitting behind bars and in a series of pre-dawn raids last week throughout the Miami and Dade County area, federal, state and local authorities started rounding up the illegal drivers by picking up 7 truck operators. Many more arrests are coming….
